Laredo

Welcome to Laredo!

Laredo, a municipality on the eastern coast of Cantabria, is one of the main tourist destinations in northern Spain. Nestled in a place of great natural beauty, the more than four kilometers of fine, white sand of Salvé Beach define the spectacular silhouette of a town overlooking the sea.

THE HANSA in Laredo – Experience
Laredo, with its 11,000 inhabitants, its pleasant climate even in winter, its excellent sea views and sunsets, its old town, the hospitality of its people, its cultural wealth, and its restaurants, where all this is combined with nature, is the perfect town to explore.

Fishing Port – Gastronomy
After strolling the streets of the village of Pejina, as the people of Laredo call themselves, no walker can go without a moment to rest and enjoy a mouthwatering bite of anchovies, accompanied by other local products, while enjoying its wonderful bay on a boat ride. Next, a visit to one of the local canneries, world-renowned for their anchovy processing, is a must. Visitors can discover the painstaking handwork, craftsmanship, and the high price that comes with processing this exquisite product.

Throughout the two-day tour, visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy Laredo's excellent cuisine several times, and will remember it when they return to their home country. The "respigos," the "green gold" of Laredo, a subsistence vegetable in many fishermen's homes in the post-war period, highly prized today; its stews, its sins, the star product of each campaign, and seafood. The "caprichos del emperador," artisanal bonbons made with high-purity chocolates, not to mention the wineries and inns.

La Puebla Vieja (Old Town)

The old town centre consists of narrow, cobbled streets that are reminiscent of the city's medieval past. Here you will find the pre-Gothic church of Santa María de la Asunción, the Puerta de San Lorenzo, which houses the Charles V Interpretation Centre and the Old Town Hall with the ‘Hanseatic Room’. The tour of Puebla Vieja takes you past manor houses, palaces, coats of arms and old walls.

Church Santa María de la Asunción

The pre-Gothic church of Santa María de la Asunción, dating from the 13th and 14th centuries, is located in the old town centre and contains its most valuable treasure, the altarpiece of Bethlehem, a masterpiece of Brussels sculpture, a Flemish work from the 15th century.
