Hanseatic Guild

The Hanseatic Guild advises and supports the Union of Cities THE HANSA in its activities and projects, and also initiates its own projects. In general, members of the Hanseatic Guild are people who have shown particular commitment to THE HANSA in the course of their previous professional or honorary activities, and who continue to contribute their experience to the work of the city group as members of the Guild.

The Hanseatic Guild was set up by a resolution of the Assembly of Delegates in 2004, and since then it has been a permanent part of THE HANSA.

Aims of the Hanseatic Guild

The aim of the Union of Cities THE HANSA is to contribute to the economic, cultural, social and governmental unification of Europe and to strengthen the self-confidence of the towns and cities so that they can play their part as a place of living democracy. The Hanseatic Guild supports the Union of Cities in fulfilling this objective and has taken on the following tasks:

  • Active support of THE HANSA events at regional, inter-regional and international level
  • Conduct of meetings in the form of regional events, e.g. the Westphalian Hanseatic Day, other Hanseatic events and in particular international Hanseatic Days
  • Supporting and conducting campaigns to promote the idea of THE HANSA among the general public
  • Promotion of exchange of culture and traditions, strengthening economic and trading contacts, and enhancing exchange of knowledge, social viewpoints and information
  • Conduct and support of individual HANSA projects

The Hanseatic Guild has launched a new logo

The Hanseatic Guild has given itself a new logo in 2026. It is intended to serve both as a symbol for use on flyers and similar materials, as well as an official letterhead. The focus was on ensuring a simple design that aligns with the style of the Union of Cities THE HANSA. For the first time, the logo is being created in both German and English. Thanks go to guild member Wolfgang Streblow (Lippstadt) and his daughter Katharina for creating the design. You can find the complete article about the new logo design of the Hanseatic Guild here.

Hanseatic Quiz

The Hanseatic Quiz, organised for the first time by the Hanseatic Guild to mark 46th International Hanseatic Day in Stargard, was a resounding success: a total of 18 towns and the Fair Hansa working group took part by submitting a quiz question and providing a prize. The questionnaire contained questions of varying levels of difficulty – ranging from a famous Lübeck sweet to the origin of the name ‘Kyritz an der Knatter’. The prizes could be collected from the stands of the participating towns at the Hanseatic Market. Read the full report on the 2026 Hanseatic Quiz here.
