New Hanseatic comic brings medieval Lübeck to life

Calender Icon 29. June 2026

The new comic book "Die Bergenfahrer", published by the Archaeology Department of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck in collaboration with Kilian Andersen Verlag, transports readers to medieval Lübeck. Set against the backdrop of the Hanseatic Day in 1381, the comic tells a story of friendship, loyalty and social change – set in an era when the city was a centre of power in Northern Europe. The story is based on historical events and the latest archaeological research findings.

At the heart of this new volume lies a conflict that actually shook the Hanseatic city in the late 14th century. Lübeck’s craftsmen are demanding a greater say in political decisions. A power struggle develops with the city council, in which the orphans Thomas and Hille, along with their master, the merchant Gherard, find themselves caught in the crossfire.

Unlike many historical comics, "Die Bergenfahrer" is not based solely on a generic medieval setting. The plot’s underlying narrative was developed by the Archaeology Department of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck. The historical background, central themes and numerous details of urban life are based on academic research and archaeological findings.

With this new volume, the entire “Bergenfahrer” series is now available in German for the first time. The two previous volumes of the series, which was originally created in the Netherlands, have also been translated into German. All three volumes are now available for 9.95 euros each via the Kilian Andersen Verlag website.
