Weight of water

16. Sep 2023 until 17. Sep 2023 Zutphen

You are invited on 16 and 17 September to a spectacular performance that will literally be played on the water of the river IJssel. The river, which connects 6 historical Hanseatic cities, plays an important role in our past and water is a challenge for our future. 6 Dancers play dangerously with balance and challenge each other on a floating staircase. In the process, they perform tricks that leave you short of eyes. Live music accompanies the performance from the quay.

The world is tottering. We are balancing on the threshold of the future - vulnerable and longing for something to hold on to.

The floating staircase Triumph by visual artist/architect Rob van Dam is the inspiration for The Weight of Water an exciting and poetic dance/circus performance on water. Sleek white in design and imposing in appearance, the swaying staircase creates an unstable balance. All it takes is for one of those on board to move to the other side and the whole thing tips over. The dance on the sailing staircase thus has a lot at stake: the six performers must react immediately to the movement of each other and the object. It thus shows a striving for power, but also shows dependence.

Choreographer Pia Meuthen, whose work brings dance and circus into dialogue, was immediately fascinated by Triumph's theatrical eloquence. The sailing staircase is a beautiful work of art with enormous potential. It invites dance and acrobatic use, both on top and on the sides. Two live musicians support this performance, which will take place in the marina on Coenenparkstraat.

It is a collaboration of Hanseatic Year 2023 with festival Oeverloos. At least 500 spectators can gather on the embankment around the marina that forms a natural grandstand. On the quay 45 minutes beforehand, there will be a lot to experience, so come on time.
