IJsselbiënnale

17. Jun 2023 8:00 AM until 17. Sep 2023 10:00 PM

This year sees another edition of The IJssel Biennial! The IJssel Biennial is an outdoor art exhibition featuring temporary artworks in special locations along the banks of the river IJssel. The focus on the relationship between man and landscape offers tantalising glimpses into one of the most topical social themes of our time: climate change. The cycle route of over 120 kilometres along all artworks is a true voyage of discovery through the IJssel Valley. The outdoor exhibition together with a broad programme of activities will take place from 17 June to 17 September.

In the outdoor exhibition, we present about 30 temporary, monumental works of art by national and international artists at special locations in the landscape. The Nevengeul offers numerous exhibitions, performances and other activities. The cycle route of over 100 kilometres takes you along all the artworks and activities: a voyage of discovery through the landscape of our country's most beautiful river.

The IJssel Biennale zooms in on the relationship between man and landscape and deals with the impact of climate change on our landscape. The art offers a surprising, provocative, poetic and sometimes activist look at perhaps the most topical social theme of the moment. Under the title 'Ground Tones', the focus in 2023 is on the aspect of earth / soil / ground.

IJsselbiennale 2023 x Hanseatic year 2023

The IJssel Biennial is a stimulating art event along the river IJssel with an international outdoor exhibition and an extensive cultural programme. The third edition of the IJsselbiennale in 2023 coincides with the Hanseatic Year. Our cycle route will take you through as many as six Dutch Hanseatic cities. Just like the Hanseatic cities, the IJsselbiennale has the river as its carrier and international ambitions. We work together with over 100 partners from the region, connected by the river and we use art as a catalyst to strengthen the connection between these partners. IJsselbiennale 2023, titled Grondtonen, puts earth, soil and ground centre stage. Literally in the sense of the importance of good soil for a sustainable future, but also figuratively. Because the mycelium in particular, an underground network that is important for the entire ecosystem, is a wonderful metaphor for the - sometimes invisible, but essential - network of the Hanseatic cities, both in the past and in the future. This is how we build on the rich tradition of the Hanseatic League: we use the connecting power of the river IJssel to strengthen cooperation between networks and to develop new perspectives on the problems of today and tomorrow.

So get on your bike, immerse yourself, be surprised and experience the IJssel Biennale with all your senses.
