Toruń has been a member of the Great Hanseatic League since the 13th century, with its first recorded political involvement dating back to 1280. Historically, the city served as a vital commercial intermediary: importing cloth, salt, and wine from the West while exporting grain, furs, and timber from Polish and Prussian lands to the Hanseatic ports. Although the historical Hansa ceased to exist in 1669, its legacy lives on through the New Hansa, which Toruń joined in 1980 to cultivate its merchant and riverine traditions. Every year, the city celebrates International Hanseatic Day to commemorate these rich traditions through exhibitions, workshops, and cruises on the Vistula River.
