The Annentag is the largest inner-city fair in the Weserbergland region and is organized by the city council of Brakel. The festival traditionally takes place on the first weekend in August. With more than 320,000 visitors, the Annentag is a major crowd-puller, attracting visitors from far beyond the region. Every year, from Friday to Monday around the first Sunday in August, approximately 280 showmen and vendors transform Brakel's old town into a vibrant festival mile. On Sunday, a solemn procession commemorates the festival's religious origins through the veneration of St. Anne in the baroque St. Anne's Chapel just outside the town gates. Following an old tradition, deals are still sealed with a handshake at the general market and livestock market early Monday morning. A magnificent fireworks display on Monday evening brings four days of festivities to a close.
