A NEW SONG WE SING concert - European Hanse Ensemble

Music of the Reformation era

2. Jun 2024 5:00 PM Bremen

Soon after Martin Luther posted his theses in Wittenberg in 1517, the new faith spread, particularly in the north. As early as the 1920s, new orders of worship appeared in numerous cities and the need for new church music arose. Based on the texts and hymn melodies created in Luther's environment and partly by himself, composers took on this task. The city of Magdeburg was a stronghold of production (and of Protestantism itself). Musicians such as Alexander Agricola, Gallus Dressler and Leonhard Schröter worked at the Latin schools there and left artistic compositions for posterity. The European Hanseatic Ensemble brings these to new life.
