Zutphen: small town with big city elan Zutphen, with its population of almost 32.000, is not a big town. Still, besides its plendid townscape it has a unique attraction. The promenade along the banks of the river IJssel offers abundant opportunity to enjoy the leisured beauty of the river. Art and history enthusiasts are amply provided for by the two museums: the Municipal Museum with its collection of artefacts and the Henriette Polak Museum with its collection of modern art. On your wonderings through the old town, you meet an ample variety of historie buildings. Unique is the Librije, a beautifully preserved 16th century library of manuscripts on chain, built-on the the Walburg Church.
Zutphens' municipal authorities do their utmost to make life as pleasant as possible for its residents. The town invests in its future -not only are there housing schemes, but also plans to ceate new industrial zones.
From the Martinetsingel you can see what Zutphen looked like in the early Middle Ages. The old town wall is still there in all its splendour and behind it are the pittoresque roofs of ageold houses. On the Martinetsingel you can also find the Drogenaps Tower, dating from 1446. Another eyecatching defence, baring witness to a glorious past, is the Berkel Ruin on the Hagepoort Square.
Services Thanks to its significance as a regional centre, Zutphen has a great diversity of (specialist) shops. The town is famous for its Thursday and Saturday markets and its centre offers excellent shopping facilities. Engergetic visitors have quite a few sports accommodations at their disposal and water sports are also possible. A day in Zutphen may be concluded by a visit to the theatre, the art cinema or one of the many cafes and restaurants. Besides, there are all sorts of educational facilities cloese at hand. Zutphen is proud of its superregional institutions, such as the Chamber of Commerce, the Food Inspection Service and the District Employment Exchange. Further more, Zutphen is the district centre of jurisdiction. Zutphen is situated between the river IJssel and the Twente Canal. The Berkel Stream runs through the heart of the town. This is no coincidence, for in the past water was essential for trade. Zutphen is surrounded by various regions of great natural beauty and cultural historic value, like Achterhoek, Twente, Overijssel Range, Salland and Veluwe. Zutphen is well accessible. The town is a junction of important water-, railway- and road connections. Its accessibility is all the more reason to visit the beautiful lively town of Zutphen.
