The district town of Uelzen is over 735 years old, and today the
economic and cultural centre of the predominantly rural surrounding
area, nestled in the stunning Ilmenau floodplain landscape and
surrounded by three nature parks.
Uelzen is a pleasant place to live, work, holiday and stay. It is a
town in which history is respected and in which the past meets the
present and the future in a harmonious blend of architecture.

Hundertwasser train station

half-timbered houses
The „Hundertwasser railway station“ in Uelzen works magic in attracting visitors. It was remodelled as an "environmentally, culturally oriented" station to the plans of the famous Austrian artist and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser. The Hundertwasser train station is also where the "Weg der Steine" (path of stones) begins – the 21 colourfully painted stone sculptures by German-Swedish artist Dagmar Glemme that line the route into the town centre. A pedestrian zone, traffic-free shopping streets, little alleys and art along the way make a stroll through town a real pleasure, with charming cafes and restaurants inviting you to stop off and take the weight off your feet.

Ulenköper monument
Uelzen has a vibrant cultural scene. The "Theater an der Ilmenau"
theatre offers a wide and varied programme and attracts many
culture lovers from near and far. In late summer, Holdenstedt
palace, which houses the regional museum and a unique glass
collection, is at the heart of the "Holdenstedter Schlosswochen", a
high-class cultural event with concerts, exhibitions and lectures.
Every two years, an international flute competition is held in
Uelzen, in dedication to the town's most famous musician, Friedrich
Kuhlau.
In St.-Marien church, visitors can marvel at the "Golden ship", the
emblem of the town. The origin of this highly-detailed medieval
gold artefact remains a mystery to this day. Near to the church is
the Ulenköper monument, both part of Uelzen's history and a tourist
attraction.
