Welcome to the Hanseatic City of Rostock and the seaside resort Warnemünde! At almost 800 years old, the Hanseatic city of Rostock is not only the oldest, but also the largest seaport and university town in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. With its unique position on the water and the combination of a large city, attractive seaside resort, the original Rostock moorland landscape, and the widest sandy beaches on the German Baltic sea coastline, Rostock and the seaside resort of Warnemünde are numbered among the most beautiful vacation spots in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Hanse, beach and coastal forest

The cityscape of the Hanseatic city is stamped with the traditional ‘Brick Gothic’ of the Hanseatic period. The town center around the historical ‘Universitätsplatz’, Rostock’s ‘Altstadt’, and the city harbor all invite you to linger and stroll around. The multifaceted gastronomy scene and numerous shopping deals complete every stay in Rostock. Sandy white beaches and resounding Baltic Sea waves contrast well with the seaside resort of Warnemünde, found only 15 km away from the city center. Enjoy the view of the unique coastline from the Warnemünde light house at 31 Meters high. The kilometer-wide beach invites you to sunbathing and beach and water sports. In addition to the traditional fishing boats which sell fresh fish on the ‘Alter Strom’, one meets the international cruise ships at the passenger dock leading toward Germany’s largest anchored cruise port. The Rostock moorland is full of nature discovery. To the east of Warnemünde, in the Markgrafenheide district, the age-old coastal forest offers the best possible conditions for an adventure hike or bike tour with its special and healthy climate. The main maritime events, like Warnemünde Week and the ‘Hanse Sail’, are yearly highlighted events that you cannot afford to miss out on. Sailing fans and those passionate about ships get to experience a unique spectacle at one of the best sailing areas in the world.

Events all year

There is something to experience all-year-round in Rostock and Warnemünde. Everything begins on January 1 with the “Warnemünder Turmleuchten”. Experience this spectacular laser show and ring in the New Year with us! In February the Warnemünde winter fun begins on the wintery beach where visitors await horse carriage rides, live music, and all kinds of warm delicacies. In spring-time you can experience the annual ice-bathers or ‘Rostock harbor seals’ and their traditional dunk in the sea or “Stromerwachen”. Summer sports such as sailing, surfing, kite-flying, hiking, Segway-driving or biking take place all along the Baltic Sea coast cycle route. If it is not swimming weather, the AOK ACTIVE BEACH offers 7,500 m² of fun and games right on the beach. If you would prefer something more “smooth-sailing”, you can visit the health resort concert, the arts and crafts market, or go on a romantic sailing trip into the sunset.

Fall and winter lend themselves especially well to the numerous places of cultural interest and museums in and around Rostock. In November when the ‘Volkstheater Rostock’ enters Warnemünde restaurants, culture meets pleasure once again. Whether it be with ‘Kneipness’, ‘Original-Thalasso’, or seaweed baths, let your mind wander with our numerous wellness offers in the region.
