Online-Card - Neuss

Neuss, one of the oldest cities in Germany and a member of the Hanseatic League, is also a modern centre of trade and commerce. “Novaesium’s” historical beginnings can be traced back to the times of the Roman Emperor Augustus. In the Middle Ages Emperor Frederick III made Neuss a Hanseatic city following its successful resistance to the year-long siege by the Duke of Burgundy, Charles the Brave, 1474/75. Its favourable position on the rivers Erft and Rhine allowed trade, particularly with the Netherlands, to flourish. Trade relations extended as far as Scandinavia and even into the Baltic.
