Online-Card - Neuss

Neuss, one of the oldest cities in Germany and a member of the Hanseatic League, is also a modern centre of trade and commerce. “Novaesium’s” historical beginnings can be traced back to the times of the Roman Emperor Augustus. In the Middle Ages Emperor Frederick III made Neuss a Hanseatic city following its successful resistance to the year-long siege by the Duke of Burgundy, Charles the Brave, 1474/75. Its favourable position on the rivers Erft and Rhine allowed trade, particularly with the Netherlands, to flourish. Trade relations extended as far as Scandinavia and even into the Baltic.

Neuss spans the time between ancient and modern and has much to offer. There is a hugely varied cultural programme, with the Museum Island Hombroich, the Globe Theatre at the racecourse, the Clemens-Sels Museum and the Rhenish Theatre, an abundance of leisure activities in the Erft-Rhine region and a variety of excellent sports facilities. There is even all-year-round skiing in Neuss, on the first indoor ski slope to be built in Germany.
