Online-Card - Mühlhausen

If you roam Mühlhausen, you come across centuries old German town history at every turn. Even nowadays, the 2750 metres long city wall with its several gates and defence towers - a construction of the 12th and 13th century - surrounds the medieval town centre which was spared both world wars. Not medieval at all, you will find the wide range of cultural and leisure offers which include a large thermal bath, a bowling centre, etc.

Since the German reunification, the economic structure of Mühlhausen went through a complete change. Former industrial factories in the sector of mechanical engineering, microelectronics and textile industry gave way for modern small and medium-sized companies in the sectors of vehicle ancillary industry, metal engineering, textile and food production, trade and service. Mühlhausen accommodates the biggest and most modern vocational school centre of Thuringia. The practised combination of vocational training and academic work with international connection helped the school to superregional appreciation.

Mühlhausen formally joined the Hanseatic League in 1430. However, a 400 years lasting Hanseatic membership since the 13th century is proved. Most appealing to the big maritime cities were cloths and isatis tinctoria, a plant for colouring cloths indigo, from Mühlhausen. The import was mostly confined to fish which was very important for an inland city. Since 1990, Mühlhausen belongs to the Hanseatic League Die HANSE.
