The hanseatic town of Deventer today, is a lively town based on a strong historic foundation and surrounded by a unique and characteristic rural area. Deventer and the surrounding villages of Diepenveen, Schalkhaar, Lettele and Okkenbroek form the new municipality of Deventer since 1st January 1999. Deventer has about 86.000 inhabitants who live mainly in the areas around the inner city. Deventer: a hanseatic town on the river IJssel. A town situated along the river has something very appealing. Life is perfect here. Since a long time, Deventer is known for its hospitality. Many famous Dutch people lived here- for instance Desiderius Erasmus and Geert Groote. Deventer is one of the oldest towns in The Netherlands. Therefore it comes as no surprise that the oldest house of The Netherlands can be found in Deventer.
