The city of Brandenburg an der Havel, located in the middle of the Havelland region, is considered the cradle of the “Mark Brandenburg”. There are many ways to explore the city of Brandenburg, whether you stroll through the three different medieval town centres or you take a sightseeing tour by boat: you will always encounter many relics of over 1,000 years of history. The three historic town centres –the Old Town (Altsatdt), New Town (Neustadt) and the Cathedral Island – are full of interesting sights like Brandenburg Cathedral, the great churches of St. Katharinen, St. Gotthardt and St. Nikolai, the Old Town Hall with the Roland statue, the four medieval tower gates and the remains of the original town walls. They all contribute to the unique character of this pretty town on the Havel, as do the many lovingly-restored old houses in the historic streets and alleyways, the spacious parks and lawns, the winding arms of the river and the large lakes. Brandenburg’s many and varied museums are also very interesting, for example the unusual Cathedral and Industry Museum. Hanseatic League:
First contacts of the Old Town and the New Town to Hamburg can be back-dated into the middle of the 13th century, because the interior of “Mittelelbe” was required for the supply of breadstuffs and beer barley for the important trade with the Netherlands. Regarding to the fact that the information about Brandenburg’s membership in the Hanseatic League are most spare, it seems that the membership in the 14th century was informal. Back in 1310 townsman Henneken Cirkzow participated in the Hanseatic day in Greifswald, 1368 Brandenburg appears, next to other cities in a writing of the Hanseatic League. In the following years the towns of the March yield to the pressure applied by the Margrave and accepted interferences into their independence. 1476 both towns apologise their absence from Hanseatic day. The alliance to the Hanseatic League got looser, even both towns were listed in the League. In 1467/68 merchant Henning Flatow of Brandenburg is named as the alderman of the Hanseatic branch office in Bruges. In a document from 1512 it was disbelieved that Brandenburg is a member of the Hanseatic League.
