Online-Card - Alfeld (Leine)

The Hanseatic town of Alfeld is set amidst the delightful countryside of the Leinebergland region. The town has a 150-year history as an industrial location with a focus on general engineering, the production of shoemaker's lasts and paper manufacturing and processing. The old town centre boasts a wealth of semi-timbered houses including the Latin School (1610) which ranks among Northern Germany's most beautiful detached semi-timbered structures. One building of worldwide renown is the Fagus factory (1911-1918), one of the early works of architect and Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius. With its design dominated by steel and glass, in the early years of the 20th century the factory was a pioneering piece of architecture. The Fagus complex has gone down in architectural history as the first modern industrial facility in the world.
Alfeld is a thriving town with everything it takes to make an attractive place to live, including all levels of primary and secondary schools, social institutions, sports facilities and rich and varied cultural programmes. For visitors and holidaymakers alike, the town offers a friendly and relaxing atmosphere, while the surrounding hills and woods provide endless opportunities for walks, hikes and cycle tours, all year round. Alfeld became a member of the Hanseatic League when it joined the Confederation of Saxon Towns (Sächsischer Städtebund) in 1426.
